Michigan - Love It! (If the Lake isn't rough)

As much as we enjoyed Canada, it was nice to be back in the US.

Monday, July 7, 2014 - DeTour, MI.  We stayed at the very nice DeTour marina.  The docks were just replaced last year.  This is a great place to watch freighters passing through the strait to Lake Superior.

Tuesday, July 8, 2014 - Mackinaw City.  It was a little drizzly going over to Mackinaw City but we found our way and got a slip at State Strait Marina.  Another very nice marina.  We finally had to break down and buy a new starter battery for the starboard engine and fueled up at Shepler's.  A nice expensive day topped off by a visit to the Key Hole Bar.

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 - Mackinac Island.  We took our bikes on the ferry over to Mackinac Island.  Jim had been there before and wasn't really that interested in going but was nice enough to take me. We rode our bikes around the road that circles the island stopping to climb the 207 stairs to view the Arch rock.  Jim was more impressed with the stairs.  LOTS of PEOPLE at Mackinac, makes up for the lack of automobiles.   We came back into town had a beer and took the ferry back to Mac City.

Thursday, July 10, 2014 - Poteskey, MI.  We really enjoyed Poteskey.  The marina is nice, the downtown is very vibrant with shopping and restaurants, there is a bike trail that goes to Harbor Springs and Charlevois.  We stayed 3 days.  Rode our bikes and found a bike shop that had tubes and a tire for the folding bikes.  We were finally able to replace the rear patched tube and tire on Jim's bike.

Sunday, July 13, 2014 - Lake Charlevoix
We left Petoskey Sunday morning thinking we would go to Northport.  The wind picked up and the lake got rough so we ducked into Lake Charlevoix.  This port is extremely popular. We called the Municpal marina and were number 10 on the wait list.  We cruised into the lake and checked out the anchorages and ended up anchoring in Oyster bay.  The wind died down and it was a beautiful afternoon with lots of local traffic at the anchorage.  The anchorage was great until a little after midnight when the wind switched out of the south.  We pulled up and moved across the lake with a full moon and quiet conditions on the other side of the lake.

Interesting home at Charlevoix

Monday, July 14, 2014 - Leland, MI.  Headed out of Charlevoix making the 7:30 am opening of the bridge that crosses the harbor. We arrived in Leland expecting to stay at least 2 days as a front pushes  through.  Leland is another nice Michagan port and the marina filled up as the wind picked up.  It is a small town that caters to tourist with shopping and restaurants.  The old fishing shanties have been preserved and converted to quaint little shops in an area know as Fishtown.  We stayed 2 nights waiting for wind to die down.

Immaculate restored Jeep in Leland.

Wednesday, July 15, 2014 - Frankfort, MI.  We left Leland shortly before noon.  This is a late start for us but we wanted the lake to calm down a little before we ventured out.  There was a steady departure of boat traffic out of the marina with it being nearly empty by the time we left.  We had a nice run down to Frankfort.
